I live the national parks in the West and have visited most of them numerous times. Therefore, mysteries based in the parks hold a special place in my reading list. I stopped reading the first book in the series but later returned and am now finished with the third book, which takes place in Yellowstone. I think the author's writing continues to improve, the characters more nuanced. The mysteries keep you guessing. I have learned a lot about the parks and their ecology, but not in a heavy handed way. My major complaint is that the hero is a bit too Macho for me, especially with a new wife a kids. The most egregious example was the climb alone down the mine shaft in the second book. No one in their right mind would have done that, especially given his age and status. But apart from that, the books are fun, factual, and a great read. Chuck Bender is a fortyish archeologist whose work takes him from one national park to another—a potent premise for a sequence of mysteries. But the series also involves Bender’s adjustments to life with a much younger woman who brings two girls to their marriage, eight and ten years old in “Yellowstone Standoff.”Ay, there’s the rub. Author Scott Graham works hard to rationalize Bender’s decision to drag his whole family with him on a scientific expedition into a remote area of Yellowstone trembling with earthquakes and full of inexplicably aggressive bears and wolves. Yet the wife and kids don’t add much to what is, otherwise, an intriguing tale. If at one point the daughters find themselves in a cabin with a corpse, a comatose woman, and an injured uncle, a good hug it seems is enough to take care of any trauma. The book would have been more persuasive if Chuck just left the family home. Fortunately, Graham does justice to the landscapes he describes and writes fine action scenes. Maybe next time he can make his archeologist’s brood a more intrinsic part of the story.
